One year appointment
Emmalene had her 1 year well baby check up on the 21st. I'm just now getting around to blogging about it. Things have been pretty crazy around here this week. Leila spent last week in Houston with her Oma and Pops. She had so much fun she told her Auntie that she did not miss her Mommy because she had her Oma. That broke my heart a little bit, but I guess its better than her crying and missing us the whole time. Wednesday was Emma's appointment. Both Justin and I were off work that day so we took her over there together. Man life is a lot easier with just one kid in tow! Especially when that one kid is the one that DOESN'T get carsick! We got in to the doctor office and were taken back right away (that doesn't happen often!) Emmalene was weighed and measured, she gained weight since the last visit! She weighed 16 pounds 6 ounces. That's a 3 pound gain since her 9 month visit. She's still not on the chart, but she's moving on her curve and that's good enough for us. She measured 27 inches (15th percentile) and her head was something like 44 cm. (50th percentile) So she's got a big ol dome and a little body. I look at her and she looks so chubby to me, well chubby compared to what Leila ever looked like at her age. I thought for sure she would be on the chart! I thought she would be in the 5th percentile, so I was kind of surprised when the doctor plotted her underneath. When we got home I pulled out Leila's baby book to compare the two girls at one year. I figured out why Emmalene looks so much bigger than Leila, at one year Leila was an inch and a half taller than Emmalene but an entire pound lighter. When you're only 15 or 16 pounds total I guess one pound difference can be drastic. If you look at our little Emmie she's got the cutest little rolls on her thighs and a cute little puppy tummy. She's 100% perfect in my book. Oh, there is another chart that her nutritionist plotted her on later in the afternoon that compares height to weight, and on that chart she is in the 50th percentile. According to that chart she is perfectly proportionate. I don't know why her doctor doesn't plot her on that chart, I like that chart! As you may have seen from the pictures I've posted, her hair is finally starting to grow in! It's turning a lighter color, I'm sure it will stay brown, but it won't be as dark as Leila's. Her eyes are still a mystery. The doctor says they should be done changing by now, but I don't think they are done. They are brown on the inside and blue on the outside! They are very unique. I am not sure what she would put on her driver's license! I guess she could choose. As for her milestones, she's a busy busy baby! She decided over night that she was going to start eating real food. Now she eats EVERYTHING! She'll eat more at a meal than her sister does, which I guess isn't saying much, Leila isn't a very good eater. Her favorite foods are avocados, scrambled eggs and hot dogs, but she will happily eat anything you place in front of her. Our next big transition is switching her from bottles to sippy cups. So far she pretty much just plays with her cup. We'll have to see how it goes tomorrow when Justin is home with her. She doesn't take a bottle real well when I'm home anyway, so she really doesn't want much to do with the sippy. She's been standing up without holding on for a while now, maybe a month or two, but wasn't really interested in trying to walk until just this past week. She took a step a couple of days ago, it was awesome. She did it again that night so that Justin could see, but after that she didn't want to perform anymore for us. Then just this morning she took three steps in a row. I'm sure it won't be long before she's walking, she has to keep up with her tornado sister! She says a few words: mama, dada, something that sounds like thank you, hi, yes, no and something that sounds like all done. She's started blowing kisses, giving hugs and her favorite: hitting her hand to her head and saying doh! (she learned that one from Aunt Melissa.) She's still our happy smiley baby. Man is she always happy! She's such a bright light of sunshine in our house. I love that kid!
